Sarah McDuffie
Sarah McDuffie’s path to become a nurse hasn’t been easy. But with an instructor who challenges her, a little sister who looks up to her, and an aunt who always encourages her to do the next right thing, she can say with confidence…
“I'm finally ready to take the next step.”
First Journey Stop:
Charleston Job Corps
“I didn’t go to college straight out of high school. In fact, I dropped out of high school when I was 17. Those were some rough years for me. At 20, I went to Job Corps in Charleston, West Virginia – which is a great program – and they helped me get my GED and CNA license. Best thing I ever did for myself!”
Second Journey Stop:
Various Nursing Homes
“Throughout my 20s, I was really proud of my work as a CNA. I like hands-on work, and I want to make a difference. Even if I can’t change the world, that’s okay as long as I can make someone else’s life better.”
Third Journey Stop:
Aiken Technical College
“I wanted to continue helping people and found ATC by searching online for Nursing programs. I was surprised by how challenging the LPN program is, but it has been totally worth it! And my instructor Dr. Tara Johnson is so full of wisdom about nursing, she’s down-to-earth, and she genuinely cares about her students.”
Where will Sarah go next?
“Because no one in my immediate family is a college graduate, I’m looking forward to being the first. And I hope my little sister will follow in my footsteps. I want to show her that success IS possible, no matter what you go through in life. And professionally, I’m very excited about being an LPN in a nursing home!”
